°blauwe tafel
°blauwe tafel

°manneke pi
°Manneke pi / °π de mère
Manneke pi is a 3D abstracted result from a quest for the world’s characterisation of man or woman, that is, people (as can be recognised on traffic lights, WC designations, advertisements, escape routes, the Egyptian “Ankh” symbol of life, voodoo dolls, drawings by Keith Haring, … ). The virtually always present spreading of arms and legs with an abstraction of the head brought us quickly to the “pi” symbol.
Initially meant as a “3D emergency light with an escape route or 3D WC designation”, the idea was born to make this “manneke” (little fellow) in clay in the way primeval fertility statues have been made. Ceramics was chosen and the figures that have been used within this context since the beginning of time gave us the link with body painting that is now again so popular. The elegant aspect and pureness of the glazed ceramics, its apparent fragility, the continuation of a tradition and the personalised figures spice the project in a subtle manner.
A wink towards Brussels’ manneke pi(ss) and the partnership sealed on the back stamp (!) of a strong Flemish company combined with a Walloon company, Obumex from Staden and Royal Boch from La Louvière, give the product a great universal dimension even though it is traditionally local.
Material: cast and glazed ceramics.
“Pi de mère”: symbolises people being together in line, holding hands or saucily around the world.
“Holepi”: a sea of people together without a distinction being made.
“Djeezes”: the answer to “the cross in every abode”; the characterisation of the hanging hole offers the opportunity of releasing the tiny figure from the grasp of his nails. “Djeezes, what have we done!”.
“Brodepi”: refers to the paper dollies under cakes or snacks but they have been reinterpreted by ceramics artist Tony Damen on commission.
“69”: spoons that fit together next to each other decorated with the recognisable theme of roses in old rose over the spoons themselves. Each spoon is a fragment of a whole. The theme on this set is called “la vie en ‘roses’”.

°ben in bad
°ben in bad
The more mobile a person becomes, the more acutely grows his or her need for an own space.
The kilobytes on your computer are stacked proportionally to the paper on our desks and list of rankings.
The more often we dine out, the more attention we pay to a perfectly equipped kitchen and the more time we spend reading lifestyle magazines with recipes by world-class professional chefs and amateur cooks.
We compensate taking a quick shower in the morning by our overenthusiastic health culture and spending hours of our free time relaxing in the bathtub.
A survey on available bathtubs has pointed out that there are practically no bathtubs in which you can enjoy an ergonomically relaxing bath, capitalizing on this ‘slow’ trend.
Ergonomic research, light-heartedly conducted on the beach, has brought us towards a different typology when it comes to shape: the head supported in the neck as in a hairdresser’s washbasin, an ergonomically sound backline, shaped as a ‘swimsuit’ with a minimal water content (52 litres instead of the average 120-300 litre-baths that are on the market), a ‘softly’ rippling surface giving you that holiday feeling, the water running into the bath virtually soundlessly over the entire length of the bath’s rim.
The heating element has been placed on the back side of the bath. This bath not only heats the space, it will give its users the feeling as if they are being pampered in a Hammam, an Eastern bathhouse. The water will no longer need to be changed five times during the bath, because it stays warm. The heightened evaporation level ensures a temporarily higher moisture content, with a healing and purifying effect on your skin. Baths without water are also an option.
Water used to wash hair is collected separately, behind the head rest. This extension does a double duty as overflow prevention.
In spite of the modal ergonomic measurement assumption of an adult person, this bath landscape will also be a safe, pleasant and shallow bath biotope for playing toddlers.
The innovative points of departure can best be described as follows: soft, slow, ergonomic, ecological and sexy.

°sphere
°sphere
For our own office, we found ourselves in need of a large lamp that would create an enclosed light zone above our conference table. After a long, fruitless search, we decided to design our own ‘mega-lamp’ that would create the sensation of a dome.
The result came out something like a giant egg shell, a huge bell, a half-moon... everyone seems to call it something different. One nifty feature is the little ball, a highly sensitive touch-driven control that hangs inside like the tongue of a bell. The sphere is made of ABS plastic (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), which is cast in a vacuum mould. This is an exceedingly difficult process because of the importance of even weight distribution. The Sphere is suspended from a single steel cable, so the slightest imbalance would cause the dome to tilt. This means that careful attention must be paid during the moulding process to the thickness of the materials. This can be achieved by heating the sheet evenly and then rapidly but evenly cooling it after moulding.
The sphere is available with 1 to 4 standard light bulbs as well as circular fluorescent bulbs, allowing a wide range of light intensities (from 40 watts to 250 watts) and colours. All the models come with a dimmer function by means of an aluminium ball at the centre of the dome as well as a modular dimmer in the switch box. Material: ABS Plastic, RAL-colour customisable for both interior and exterior. 3 sizes: 90/140/178 cm.
We needed a large lamp that would create an encircling sphere of light above the conference table in our office, and so began the search. After a long and fruitless quest, we finally decided to design our own mega-light with the “sphere” of a dome.
The result has been likened to a “Calimero” dome, a giant bell, a half moon…. Everybody seems to have a different name for it.
The highly-sensitive, touch-controlled ball switch is a great little gadget that controls the light.
Material: ABS plastic, optional RAL colors both inside and out. 3 sizes: 90/140/178cm

°fool moon
°fool moon
The light of a perfect circle has always fascinated people. Examples such as the returning full moon and the natural phenomena ascribed to this (higher childbirth percentage, fertility, transformation from human to animal, etc.…), the archetypical form of a UFO, the shape of a gong, the sun and more are striking examples.
Despite the full circle (full moon), its form allows it to be put in all types of positions: horizontally, diagonally, obliquely or vertically (fool moon).
The large dimensions are easily recognisable and have symbolic value due to its imposed abstraction and has the possibility of demarcating or creating spaces.
The dimensioning of the discus-shaped lamp allows us to pass each door diagonally and the limited height does not represent any restrictions, despite its large diameter (2 m), and can, therefore, be used in connection to lower building heights.

°XXXL(amp)
°XXXL(amp)
Perhaps symptomatic of an architect’s mindset, the lamps and objects are becoming increasingly ‘space defining’. The XXL-amp is essentially a flattened dome, inspired by the shape of a Chinese lantern. The twelve-segment construction makes the connection with the lantern, but a pumpkin is perhaps the first association that comes to mind, while the suspension system recalls an upside-down hot-air balloon.
If the ceiling is high, but not overly high, then the lamp can be hung at about 1.30m. As befits any impressive space, you’ll want to enter with a slight bow. Once seated at the dining or conference table, you’ll still retain a sense of the surroundings beyond the boundary. Hanging a half or a quarter XXL in a mirrored room creates an impression of spacious rooms full of giant lanterns.

The tradition of a lidded chamber pot, preserved for posterity but without the newspaper for shredding and the deep, plunging well, which have been replaced by modern-day comfort and technology.
For the men, the seat can be lifted; for the cleaning lady, the front panel can be placed to one side.

The “bible” is a rest for a book, originally a bible. The solid wood alludes to the basic material used to make paper (the recipient of the written word). In the exhibition that is currently running at the “de Mijlpaal” gallery in Heusden-Zolder, we twice placed the °bible on the floor, once as an “open” rest with a symbolic allusion to “giving” hands and once as a “closed” rest alluding to “merciful” hands.

Bain noir by Lens°ass: a dressing gown in natural white. For its creation, Lens uses an enormous expanse of material. The pattern is based on the movement of dancing Dervishes, or the fighting matrix: when you pirouette you get the same effect. The collar is one large, rolled-up bath towel. The belt is attached so that there is no chance of misplacing it. Everything is a little oversized, even the sleeves, which you can double back completely. The result is a dashing, hussar-like appearance.
And there is no more twisting and pulling when you sit with crossed legs.
For the macho, the robe can hang open over loose shorts. For the more elegant ladies, the skirt’s round cut makes sashaying a pleasure.
Bamboo by Santens: Santens has developed bamboo thread into a high-quality, fixed-loop terry cloth with a unique feel: it is incomparably soft, it absorbs better than cotton, and it’s 100% natural. To achieve this, only the finest of the threads made from bamboo, and only the most modern dying techniques are used. These provide the special glimmering colour. Laboratory tests show that the water absorbency of bamboo fibres is much greater than that of cotton. Bamboo grows in tropical countries in a pesticide-free environment. Bamboo has natural anti-bacterial characteristics that resist bacteria. That makes this terry cloth ideal for daily hygiene. In addition to its silky appearance and cuddly feeling, the material has a natural, invigorating coolness. A Belgian quality product for a Belgian product with style.

“Ass-3, ashtray and ass-three”: the remnant of a fallen tree or tree-stump is used as the archetype of a bench (“ass” and “three”), taken to the abstract extreme as a cylindrical container with bone-shaped recesses that, oddly enough, offer the ultimate in seated comfort. Its recesses resemble an ashtray, and the “3” refers to the third chair of Lens°”ass”.
The “art of sitting” can be rediscovered or experienced through the geometrical form, the white color and the ambiguous materials. On the double ass3 you can be seated either face-to-face or back-to-back, depending on whether you are feeling interested, disinterested or conversational.
Another prototype, a hollowed-out form, has been tried out as the “negative” of its “whole” predecessor, called ass(3)hol… to be read in Dutch!

To find a “white air bed” that worked with our white summer terrace, that would become part of the context and also be easy to stack and handle, we asked our friend Steven Brouns for advice. He materialised our first sketches in coated mousse. The added value that Steven brought to the project was to use retro-verso shapes that, when put together, would form a rectangular beam volume. Spontaneously opening up the shape that had been put together resulted in both sections lying next to each other in tête-à-tête fashion. This resulting shape can be added on as a seating element or used to massage or oil your partner. The apparently solid blocks are light-weight so that everyone, including female partners, can easily handle them. Two shapes, a Z and an S, nonetheless comprising the same rectangular volumes, can be put next to each other undisturbed.

The outside is a space for family notes like “Honey…. I’ll be home a little late!”, “Where are my keys?”, etc…. The “secretary’s drawers” form an original message board between colorful rubber bands.
With the °secret ’air you can create your own office space in your home, where the user doesn’t disturb the other people living under the same roof and without screening himself/herself off completely from the other members of his/her household…. It’s also a great secret den for children, who love to use every opportunity to chat or play games…. Or what about a fun hiding place for your keys, wallet, correspondence or unread newspapers… without having to provide space outside the living environment.

°shut
°barbecook®SHUT
We always link ‘fire’ and ‘grill’ with a barbecue. The fire is lit by the occasional chef, the man. The grill ensures the meat is given those typical grill lines. The heat glow and the view of the meat ensure there is spontaneous communication. This is not the case in relation to a standard and essentially closed gas barbecue. The following combination was deemed to be the most readable towards the end user according to the customer:
-A distinct grill made of cast iron (heat accumulation).
-A chiefly heat emitting gas element (where the heat can be felt and seen).
-Horizontally closing grill shutters (here comes the name “SHUT”; a ‘coupe feu’ to temper heat and to avoid striking flames).
-A removable top screen in heat-resistant glass (which creates a hot intervening area, a salamander effect; the glass screen covers the unit when it is not being used).
-A transformation of the handle of a wok ensures we can cook more extensively or, as is usual in the Asiatic kitchen, use it upside down as an oven.
These options that are checked at every turn ensure that barbecue cooking stays “basic” and that a spontaneous cooking creativity is fostered…. An idea that is in sharp contrast with the trend of the “outdoor kitchen”.

The touch switch works on the principle of a capacitive sensor. This sensor detects any non-metal object, particularly plastics and water-containing materials.
The high water content in our bodies makes them detectable to the sensor. Since the circuit board has been mounted on a plastic plate, the sensor must first filter out the plate before detecting a presence. Without the filter, the sensor would constantly register. The output of the circuit board is a transistor that remains charged as long as the switch is touched. This means that a 24V DC teleruptor is required in order to switch the light on and off.

°woud tafel
°woud

In a T-restaurant in Peking (China), Mr. Lens was eating at an immense mirror table with candles hanging above him. It was cozy, romantic, but also streamlined and modern. For another design we already experimented with hanging led-lights suspended from low charged wires.
We marveled at the vision of a completely accidental, out-of-the box combination of a led underneath a burning candle. The effect of the translucent candle-emulsion was also heartwarming. The apparition of a led armature, burning, not at all kitschy, with light shimmering through the material structure is imprinted on our minds. “The led is on fire”, we tried it out.
